本會前身為香港貨船同業商會，創立於1963年。並於1975年改組為有限公司，定名為香港貨船業總商會有限公司。本會之會員皆經營本地之載貨躉船或貨輪，參與本港水域中流作業，海上駁運及珠江流域內河運輸。
在2003年，本港繼續成為世界第一貨櫃港，全年共處理二千萬個20呎標準箱，其中40% 是在貨櫃碼頭以外地方所處理的，直接及間接由躉船裝卸，因此本行業對香港的港口航運及物流運輸中作出重要貢獻，直接或間接僱用員工超過萬人。
除貨櫃外，本會會員亦從事處理散什貨，例如木材、鋼材、沙石、廢紙及廢鐵等，亦有從事填海、築堤、海上打椿及建橋等海事工程。

Welcoming Remarks
We would like to express our warm welcome to your entry into the CVTA website.
The main objectives of this website are four folds:-
1. To promote the public understanding of our Association and our trade.
2. To strengthen the communication between the Association and its members.
3. To improve the communication of the Association with the general public.
4. To encourage and promote the use of information technology among CVTA members.
Our Association was first founded in 1963 and was incorporated in 1975. Members of the Association are actively involved in operating cargo vessels in mid-stream operation, local barging and river trade transportation.
In 2003, Hong Kong continued to be the World's first container port, handling more than 20 million TEUS. 40% of the container throughput is handled outside container terminals, directly or indirectly served by local lighters. Therefore, members of our Association have contributed significantly to the port, shipping and logistics sectors of Hong Kong.
Apart from containers, members of our Association also handled break bulk cargoes, e.g. timber, steel, sand, stone, waste paper or scrap metal or are engaged in reclamation, constructing break-water, marine piling or bridge building.
