Congratulations on the launching of the website of the Hong Kong Cargo-Vessel Traders’ Association, which signifies the Association’s entry into the new era of IT. The website not only helps to draw a closer relationship between the Association and its members, but also helps the community members to have a better understanding of the work and the services provided by the Association and its members.

Since the inauguration of the Association in 1963, its membership has increasingly grown larger to include operations of local barges and cargo vessels, involved in local mid-stream operations, ocean-group vessels, and river trade operations in the Pearl River Delta. In 2003, over 20 million TEUs were handled by our Hong KongPort, of which 40 percent were stevedored directly or indirectly by barges. This demonstrates the significant contribution made by the industry to the port, maritime and logistics development in Hong Kong.

The launching of the website shows that the Association recognizes the importance of IT which is fundamental to the modern logistics industry. There is a need for all those involved in the logistics industry to acquire knowledge in and be conversant with the application of IT for logistics operations. Needless to say, the Association’s website will encourage a wide usage of IT among its members, form which they will be benefit.

Furthermore, the website provides an additional channel of communication. The Association has always maintained close relationship with Governments officials and other sectors of the community in exchanging views on issues regarding port, maritime and logistics. From now on, by surfing the website, community members can have unrestricted access to information concerning the Association and the services provided by its members, whenever they wish or wherever they are. They can have a better understanding of the Association’s history and the development of the industry. There is no doubt that the website helps to forge closer relationship between the Association and the community.

I would like to take this opportunity, to congratulate the Hong Kong Cargo-Vessel Traders’ Association for the successful launching of its website.
